Mount Niyrangongo treks ... NB. tours on hold here

A popular tourist attraction in DRC, this volcano last erupted in 2002 and before this in 1977.  Part of the Albertine Rift, standing within the Virunga National Park approximately 20km North of Goma and just west of the Rwandan border (easy access via road from Rwanda).

Status: Active 

  • Hold the worlds largest churning lava lake at 700ft wide
  • World’s fastest flowing lava at 100 km ph
  • Africa’s most active volcano
  • Sleep overnight on the outer volcano rim
  • Home to chimpanzees, monkeys and bushbuck

Timeframe: From the starting point  of 1989m its approximately 4-6 hours to summit.

Worth noting:

  • Climbers often experience strong altitude sickness due to the short time frame to ascent from 1989m to 3470m.  Altitude sickness medication is recommended as well as clearance from a medical professional.
  • Your hike is accompanied by national park rangers, porters and a English speaking guide.
  • Overnight tempuratures on the crater rim often fall well below zero – you will be required to pack suitable wet and cold gear to avoid hyperthermia.
